Hotel Binders

This hotel looks very nice and lovely. It’s in the capitol of Tirol, surrounded by mountains. And my experience with people from Austria is that they are very friendly and helpful. But, there is one exception…

HOTEL BINDERS!

For me and my mountain loving boyfriend, I had arranged a visit to HOTEL BINDERS and stay a few days in Innsbruck. I had contacted the hotel if there was a free room, paid my deposit and never looked at some strange German word somewhere under all the information that mattered in my e-mail contact. I was really looking forward to it.

Unfortunately, when the journey came closer, something unexpected came by so I was wondering what happened if I canceled the trip and asked this question.

All I got were answers that due to the nature of the deposit they couldn’t return my money (c’mon…paying by internet isn’t that difficult!) and that I must have been informed about a cancel insurance (the strange German word had indicated this, because after my payment they suddenly translated it for me en pointed the word out for me, because it was somewhere between a whole lot of words) and they always recommended it to their guests. Yeah sure, after they had paid the money, like in my case?!

I told him about the misinformation etc. But to make a long story short, the man had cancelled my booking without any confirmation from my side, because I was just asking the question ‘what happens if…’. And that was that. I decided not to agree with all of this, because of my loss of money (€178,-), so I contacted the European consumer commission and explained everything.

They contacted the hotel, to negotiate about getting me (some of) my money back. But probably the employee was living in his own fantasy world, and told this commission that I had contacted the hotel by phone and I was speaking perfectly German and perfectly rude, so I must have understood the German information about cancellations. That’s why he wouldn’t give me (some) money back.

WTF! I have never phoned the hotel!

And why should I e-mail them in English if my German was that good ! Yeah, arschloch is the only thing that comes in mind. I don’t know if I spelled it right, but I think it comes in really handy at this point of the story. Or maybe some pity, because pathologic lying really is a disease!
But first cancelling a booking without any permission and then making up this phone call.

Be warned people. Don’t take any risks making a reservation at this hotel. I know a lot of friendly Austrian places, but this is definitely not one of them!
And who knows what kind of made up story HE has in mind for you….

De bladeren vallen van de bomen, schappen pepernoten vullen de jumbo-vloer, ’s avonds kunnen de pucca-pantoffeltjes weer aan en warme choco vliegt over de bar. Kortom; winter is in aantocht! Niks geen nazomergemopper. Des te kouder, des te beter. En wat doen wij met deze feitelijkheden: snowboardvakantie zoeken & boeken! Hetgeen meer stress oplevert dan mijn spaanse tentamens. En zelfs een lcd-scherm uitzoeken is nog makkelijker volgens mi novio :) Waar gaan we heen, wanneer, hoe lang, welk huis, hoe duur, hoeveel auto’s, welke auto en met wie? De laatste vraag was het snelst beantwoord: de vaste knowboards crew + ‘the maup‘. Dachten wij. Want na een een dagje indooren zijn er nog 2 gegadigden bij gekomen; een vriendje en vriendinnetje extra. Een gezelschap van 6, wat gezellig en gesapig!
En dan het oord. Aangezien een tripje Canada , zoals in eerdere post te lezen, zo’n 3000 euro zal kosten p.p, blijven we toch maar binnen European borders. We willen 10 dagen, dus dan is Frankrijk behoorlijk lastig. Gezien die houten hokken vaak voor 7 dagen te boeken zijn, toch maar naar het vertrouwde land vol deernes en drollenvangers.
Oké, dat is duidelijk. Maar waaaar in Oostenrijk? Na wat research (”snowboarding the world“, erg fijn boekje voor ’sneupers’ (zoals mijn Zwitserse collega ons soort noemt :)) als wij, incl. veggie-rate per oord !) en gedeelde ervaringen, wordt het een keuze tussen St. Anton of Ischgl. In St. Anton hebben we al het een ander beleefd, Ischgl is nog een groots mysterie.

Plan is huizen zoeken op beide plekken en dan maar zien waar het beste, gezelligste, goedkoopste aanbod ons brengt! Tot nu toe nog niet verder dan de voordeur, want heel veel huisjes zitten al vol. We willen periode 28-2 bis 8-3. Ná de (voorjaars?)vakantie waarin alle Hollandsche gezinnen & gefrustreerde vrijgezellen massaal de bergen intrekken om alle normen en waarden thuis te laten.
Maar, zo’n week na de eerste letters van dit verhaal, zijn we nog niet veel verder. Fam. Peer, Fam. Hosp und Fam. Pfeifer, sind allen in der running. Allen afkomstig uit Ischgl. Alleen het ene appartement reageert niet, de ander twijfelt of we niet een dubbele boeking zijn en een laatste is toch best ienieminie voor een groep met 4 poepende en snurkende mannen.
Hoe dan ook, we moeten afwachten en blijven op ons beste duits Ischgl en St. Anton bombarderen met mailtjes…

Whistler BlackComb

Whistler Blackcomb kennen de meeste snowboarders alleen van Internet en Snowboard tijdschrijften. Maar wat gaat het serieus kosten om eens een keer niet naar ValTho te gaan?

We zijn op onderzoek uitgeweest, en zo maar een ‘fictieve’ reis geboekt.

Schoolvakanties

als eerste heb ik even naar de Canadese en Amerikaanse schoolvakanties gekeken, dit zijn meestal de drukste periodes en die voorkom ik liever.

• Canada, Vancouver : 10 t/m 14 maart is er een schoolvakantie en van 25 december t/m 5 januari natuurlijk.
• USA, Seattle : 18 t/m 22 Februari is er een schoolvakantie.

De Reis

Van de 3de t/m 16 februari gaan we vertrekken. Dat kost voor 1 persoon een vliegticket van rond de 700 euro. dan stap je niet op de berg uit (tenminste ik hoop het niet voor je) maar bij Vancouver, wat een paar uren rijden is vanaf Whistler. Met vliegen komen er extra kosten bij als je je eigen board meeneemt. De meeste vliegtuig maatschappijen vragen extra voor grote voorwerpen in je bagage. Bijvoorbeeld Air Canada : Voorwerp groter dan 1.60 kost je 80 Cad, zwaarder dan 23 kilo kost het je 50 Cad.

De Skipas

Eenmaal daar aangekomen moet je nog onderdak hebben en een skipas:

Eerst de skipas, en die is redelijk prijzig, 12 dagen in de poeder : 797.54 CAD / 553.41 Euro.

dit bedrag komt bij de officiele site vandaan. Samen met een overnachting, er is dus al een ‘package deal’ korting overheen gegaan.

Snurken

Onderdak is via de website te boeken, alleen lijkt het of ik op de Canadese Funda geland ben:

De goedkoopste Studio voor 1 persoon is bijna 2200 CAD /1,473.43 Euro.

En dan moet je nog Mooseheads drinken en lokale keuken testen, vraag me af wat een zeehondensteak kost.

The Test

Due to opinions expressed to Street Cents by the Canadian Snowboard Federation, the Canadian Ski Patrol System, and the Canadian Association of Snowboard Instructors, our testers will only use the headphones when they are on the chairlift and waiting around to ski. The experts we spoke to warned about the safety concerns when using headphones while skiing or snowboarding and warnings from the manufacturers are included in the owner’s manuals accompanying the helmets. So make sure if our test inspires you to get yourself a helmet, that you check out our safety tips at the bottom.

Street Cents hit the slopes with a group of young veteran snowboarders and asked them to compare the audio capabilities of the three leading audio capable helmets. The three snowboarders tested the helmets out at Canada Olympic Park on a very very cold day! Here’s what they had to say.

Burton Red Hi-Fi Audio

* “Putting it on is nice and easy. It has a nice fit on the head and doesn’t wiggle around.”
* “The ears are a little low on the helmet.”
* “I really liked it a lot. It has good headphones, good sound and doesn’t crackle when you have the volume high.
* “I would actually recommend this helmet to anyone that’s starting or is pretty advanced ‘cause it’s actually really a good helmet.”

Giro Bad Lieutenant

* “This one I don’t really like. It looks like a giant salad bowl on my head.”
* “It’s big and wobbly and has a really dumb earphone plug that falls out every few seconds so I don’t get to hear my music. You have to take the helmet off every time ‘cause it’s impossible to find where the ear plug goes without taking it off.”
* “The sound crackles a lot, especially at a high volume.”

The Pro-Tec Mercenary

* “Pro-Tec is different from Burton but just as good.”
* “It’s just as light as the Burton.”
* “The earphones aren’t as thick so your ears get a little cold.”
* “Burton has a little better sound, but I like this one too.”
* “I like the brightness, colour, feel…it’s comfy…I like it a lot actually.”

The Verdict

The boys decided that the Burton helmet has the best overall fit and sound quality. But, if you’re looking for a cheaper, lightweight, good-looking helmet that works well, the Protec came in at a very close second place. However, the Giro “salad bowl” helmet was unanimously declared better fit for the kitchen then the slopes!
The Lowdown

Our testers loved the idea of being able to listen to their music on the slopes, but why were they warned against riding and rocking out at the same time? Here’s why.

The Burton product warning reads - “Headphone use may cause rider not to hear surrounding circumstances that can lead to accident and possible injury or death. Headphones will also restrict your ability to hear what your edges are doing on snow and may distract you from focusing on riding safely, which may lead to loss of control.”

Dan Genge of the Canadian Association of Snowboard Instructors told Street Cents that “ear phones, whether they are worn in a helmet or not, should never be on or playing music while riding. If you can’t hear someone coming up behind you, or yelling for you to get out of the way, you’re a candidate for an accident.”

While all experts understand the thrill of having music playing while on the slopes and its ability to help you feel as though you’re in your own extreme video, they all agree that losing your ability to hear the calls of others on the hill can be very dangerous.

Another issue to be aware of when you’re purchasing a helmet is whether or not your helmet meets international standards. Only put the best on your head, so look out for this coding when purchasing: CEN, Snell RS-98, S-98 ASTM F240 Snell, ASTM.

Helmets that meet these standards have at least undergone formal testing and each of the helmets Street Cents tested meet ASTM and CEN standards. Enjoy your ride!

Snowboard ophangen

Vandaag gaan we creatief doen, en het basismatriaal is: Je snowboard! In de alpen is tegenwoordig maar 1 maand per jaar sneeuw te vinden, en het zou toch zonde zijn als de andere 11 maanden je plank ergens in een donker schuurtje staat. Daar gaan we vandaag wat aan doen, kunst wordt het , met een grote K.

Wat hebben we nodig:

• 1 Snowboard
• 1 muur
• Schroefjes met een hoek van 90 graden. ( origineel bedoeld om een kastplank mee op te hangen)
• bijpassende pluggen
• Stukje plastic/rubber buis.
• een Boor, liefst 1 met stekker
• potlood
• Beetje lijm

Hou je board tegen de muur aan, en krabbel waar de haken moeten komen. Zie foto. Boor de gaten, en druk de pluggen erin. Draai daarna de schroeven erin zodat de haakjes naar boven wijzen. Nu moet er nog 1 schroef bij, aan de bovenkant, om te voorkomen dat je te dure board weer van de muur af flikkert. Doe de schroef aan een zijkant, want dan kan je het board er makkelijk in schuiven. Als je hem in het midden doet wordt dat een stuk moeilijker. Om krassen te besparen kan je een stuk rubber/plastic over de schroeven heen schuiven. Bij de bovenste schroef moet er wat lijm tussen, anders schuift het plastic buisje er erg snel weer af.

Als de 3 schroeven in de muur zitten, board erin, klaar. Glaasje wijn erbij, Mozart, en vol bewondering naar je nieuwe schilderij kijken.

We hebben te horen gekregen dat er ook producten op de markt zijn die speciaal gemaakt zijn om je plank op te hangen. Binnenkort gaan we even een setje testen, meer informatie bij Rixon.

L2A summerpark

als je na een winter vol boarden er nog geen genoeg van kan krijgen is, een weekje gletscher-raggen wellicht een goed alternatief.
Bij het krieken van den ochtend de heuvel op naar 3200 meter en dan je freestyleskills bij schaven!!
tegen n uur of 1 als de slush pap wordt, is de tijd rijp om te gaan relexen in de zon, crossen op de dirtbike of zwemmen in de wildwaterrivier en nog meer van dies.

Er is voor ieder niveau wel wat; voor de goeierikken onder andere een 18m hoge Big Kicker en n 14m medium gelinkt aan n multifunctionale table met 2 kickers van verschillende lengtes (14m en16m)

Voor de ietwat mindere goden/durfals is er n gedeelte met 2 tables gevolgd door 2 rails, en n 2e slope style met een table en 2 rails. Ook zijn er 2 netwat grotere tables (2 kickers van 8 en 12m per table) gevolgd door een rail en tenslotte twee 8m tables.

Zelfs is er ruimte voor ons newbies ;over de hele lengte van t park zijn er 12 tables (4 lijnen van 3 tables) en 6 rails (2 lijnen met 3 rails).

Uiteraarsch is er ook n chill-out area om je wonden te likken, lekker uitterusten met n drankje ende versnapering of gewoon om te Posen.

Oh ja…. er is ook plek voor n halfpipe ;Sinds 2006, zijn de half-pipes gesitueerd in het lagere gedeelte van t park . tegenelkaar aan zijn 2 pipes, 1 beginner/intermediate pipe die 120m lang en 4.5m hoog is en n 120m lange super-pipe met een radius van meer dan 6m gereserveerd voor badass riders.

ter journalistieke info moet ik er bijvermelden dat er in europa nog meerdere gletschers zijn, sterker nog zelfs met zomer parken, maar geen is naar mijn menig mooier en beter dan deze in deux alpes (alhoewel….. t schijnt dat er toch stiekum nog wel andere oke-achtigen zijn maar voila daar weet ik niks over ).
